Community Resources - How to Respond to I.C.E.

Statement from the Oakland Spiders

The Oakland Spiders stand against hate and support immigrant & refugee communities.

Oakland knows what hate looks like — and we also know what it means to stand together in response.

As a proud Sanctuary City, Oakland has long stood against anti-immigrant violence and discrimination and has policies in place to ensure that local law enforcement does not assist federal immigration enforcement like Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in civil immigration matters.

Our team's pillars are COMMUNITY, GRIT, and JOY and a key part of that is the belief that everyone — regardless of where they were born, what language they speak, or their immigration status — deserves to live, work, and play without fear.

The Oakland Spiders stand firmly against hate in all forms — including racism, antisemitism, Islamophobia, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, and violence or discrimination against any community. We also want to be clear in condemning anti-immigrant hate and intimidation that targets immigrant and refugee communities.

We recognize the fear and uncertainty created by ICE enforcement actions and the broader climate that encourages harassment, dehumanization, and scapegoating. Immigrants and refugees are essential to Oakland — our neighbors, teammates, coworkers, friends, and loved ones — and they deserve dignity, safety, and belonging.

We also urge public leaders, including sports organizations and local partners, to use their platforms to support humane policies, back emergency legal funds, and help expand services for impacted communities.

Ultimate frisbee is rooted in Spirit of the Game — a commitment to respect and integrity that extends beyond the field. We will continue working to build a community where people can belong, compete, and thrive.

Ultimate frisbee is strongest when our communities are safe, inclusive, and treated with dignity — on and off the field. Immigrants and refugees are an essential part of Oakland, of sports, and of the communities we are proud to represent.

To our immigrant and refugee communities: We see you. You belong here. And we stand with you.

We stand with our neighbors.

We stand with immigrant communities.

We stand against hate and intimidation.

We stand for dignity, belonging, and justice.

Love is stronger than hate.
